Displax is revealing a new plastic film with multitouch sensing. It can be placed over any display or even non-display surfaces, making them into interactive devices.
Portugal-based Displax calls this a “multitouch skin” which can be thinner than paper. The company has been working on it for the past decade and plans to launch commercial products in July.

First Impressions of the New Apple iPad

It’s about the software, stupid. While all sorts of commentators were focusing on how much Apple’s new $499 iPad tablet computer looks like an oversized iPhone, the key to whether it can be the first multi-function tablet to win wide public acceptance probably lies in whether consumers perceive it as a suitable replacement for a laptop in key scenarios. And that, in my view, depends heavily on the software and services that flow through its handsome little body.
I have only spent a short time hands-on with the iPad–too short to fully run it through its paces and formally review it yet. But, after attending the rollout of the new device today, and trying out some of its features for myself, I have some first impressions.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs positioned the iPad as belonging to a new category of device between the smartphone and the laptop (since the netbook, in his view and mine, is really just a small, cheap laptop). But, as the demos unfolded, I kept thinking it was more like a hybrid of the two.
It uses the iPhone’s basic user interface and physical design. But, taking advantage of a 9.7″ screen and a fast Apple-designed processor, the iPad adds some user interface elements and functionality that aren’t available–or at least typical–on smart phones, but look more like computer software. For instance, its photo program works more like iPhoto on a Mac than the photo app on an iPhone, and it will be available with a touch version of Apple’s iWork productivity suite, which is Apple’s take on Microsoft Office. This is a much more powerful program than the phone-based office suites for the iPhone or BlackBerry, and Apple (AAPL) is only charging $30 for it.

In
recent
years
the
Internet
has
made
yet
another
impact
on
the
conventional
and
traditional
paradigms
of
the
world
as
we
know
it.
This
new
generation
–
Gen‐i
–
has
truly
come
of
age.
Gen‐i
stands
for
generation
interactive,
isolated,
iterative,
Internet
driven,
immaterial,
isogonics,
isomorphic,
(cyber)
itinerant,
inoculated,
etc.
This
new
group
views
the
world
through
a
flat
20”
screen.
But
how
have
they
changed
the
way
the
world
works
on
a
social,
legal
and
ethical
level?
The
change
is
apparent
in
the
ways
that
this
new
group
deals
with
the
real
world.
This
has
occurred
due
to
a
new
demographic
and
geographic
effect,
this
effect
is
referred
to
as
“flatteners”
by
Thomas
Friedman
in
his
book
“The
World
is
Flat:
A
Very
Brief
History
of
the
Twentieth
Century”.
In
this
work
he
outlines
ten
“flatteners”
that
have
changed
the
world.
It
was
through
these
“flatteners”
Friedman
believes
that
the
world
changed
seemingly
overnight
and
forever.
This
paper
will
discuss
these
topics
as
well
as
issues
such
as
the
digital
divide
as
it
pertains
to
higher
education,
and
specifically
a
segment
of
population
referred
to
as
“the
lost
boys”,
the
18‐34
year
old
men.

In
this
section
Friedman
discusses
how

world
changed
dramatically
on
the
days
that
the
Berlin
Wall
came
down
and
the
World
Trade
Center
was
attacked
for
the
second
and
final
time.
Friedman
describes
how
the
demolition
of
that
wall
liberated
the
mindset
of
the
East
and
West
German
people
and
the
world.
He
describes
it
as
a
“get
out
of
jail
free
card”
not
just
for
the
locally
restricted
but
for
free
trade
as
well.
This
he
believes
opened
free
trade
to
that
part
of
–
if
not
the
now
“entire
world”.
He
also
goes
on
to
describe
how
the
extremists
who
demolished
the
World
Trade
Center
also
freed
the
mindset
of
the
rest
to
start
thinking
of
terrorism
as
activities
happening
not
at
a
distance
but
also
locally,
through
telecommunications.
The
localization
of
terror
would
not
have
been
possible
without
the
ability
to
communicate
internationally
in
a
nanosecond.
This
is
where
the
second
“flattener”
comes
to
play.

When
Netscape
Went
Public
Friedman
sees
the
Netscape
IPO
as
the
catapult
that
finally
pushes
us
over
the
edge
of
reality
and
into
a
“new
world”
of
cyber‐communications.
He
talks
about
how
Netscape
was
the
start
of
the
dot.com
bubble
and
how
it
created
the
niche
for
all
others
like
Google
and
Yahoo!.
This
browser
intellectually
also
changed
how
we
think
as
people
and
more
prevalently
as
students
of
all
knowledge.
Ted
Nelson
first
describes
how
knowledge
was
to
be
disseminated
via
this
new
medium
with
his
Xanadu
project.
Nelson
believes
that
information
should
not
be
stored
and
copyrighted
but
left
on
each
person’s
workstation
to
be
picked
at
when
needed.
On
his

Nelson
describes
his
model
as
“The
Xanadu
model
has
always
been
very
simple:
make
content
available
with
certain
permissions;
then
distribute
and
maintain
documents
simply
as
lists
of
these
contents,
to
be
filled

that
browsers
now
fill
in
GIFs.)”
This
was
the
early
concept
behind
the
structure
we
find
through
the
workings
of
Gen‐i’s
most
heralded
stalwarts
–
P2Ps
–
“peer
to
peer”–
YouTube,
BigThink,
Napster,
Kazaa
and
LimeWire.
It
has
been
this
ability
to
“share”
information
that
has
truly
flattened
the
world.

Search
I
would
imagine
that
nothing
previously
has
changed
the
field
of
educational
research
in
the
same
way
that
these
aforementioned
search
engines
have.
How
students
do
research
has
been
affected
forever
by
these
marvels
of
technology.
The
“stacks”
of
most
libraries
are
bare
of
students
while
they
sit
hunched
over
glowing
depositors
of
information.
A
double‐edged
sword
to
say
the
least!
The
rise
of
these
machines
has
clearly
altered
how
educational
research
is
conducted.
Search
has
now
replaced
the
concept
of
Research.
Although
I
love
Google
I
am
concerned
with
those
that
are
in
love
with
Google.
Search,
especially
research
needs
to
be
validated
before
it
can
be
used.
Too
many
students
are
simply
copying
and
pasting
their
way
into
idiocy.
There
needs
to
be
a
better
structure
in
place
in
order
to
assure
the
content
has
merit.
In
a
recent
honors
conference
on
plagiarism
I
asked
students
how
they
feel
about
using
the
Web
for
research.
After
polling
the
class
the
level
of
students
who
used
the
Web
for
research
was
approximately
80
to
90%.
The
question
that
was
then
asked
was
how
many
used
verbatim
the
content
they
found?
I
was
surprised
to
see
the
honors
group
would
merely
use
it
as
a
springboard
for
more
research
initiatives.
This
was
a
good
thing
however
when
I
asked
the
same
question
later
to
a
group
of
non‐honors
students
the
results
were
different.
Not
only
would
they
use
the
content
but
also
in
some
cases
students
would
actually
get
papers
translated
via
Google
in
order
for
them
not
to
get
caught
for
plagiarism.
This
new
vehicle
for
research
was
truly
making
the
students
smarter
in
some
ways.
Friedman
states
that
“Google
levels
information
–
it
has
no
class
boundaries
or
education
boundaries”;
this
is
both
good
and
bad.
It
helps
educate
through
delivery
of
information
however,
the
information
may
be
in
question.

students
comes

the

quality
are
the
most
dangerous.

you
old

remember
The
Who’s
rock
opera
“Tommy”
should
empathize
with
my
statement.
We
appear
to
be
creating
a
generation
of
plugged
in,
turned
on,
tuned
out
zombies!
Just
as
television
was
the
babysitter
of
my
generation
the
iPod
and
the
iPhone
are
the
televisions
of
this
generation.
The
problem
it
generates
is
isolation.
Think
of
the
difference
between
the
old
9‐volt
transistor
radio
and
today’s
iPod.
The
difference
is
the
music
was
free
–
really
free.
Not
just
free
because
it
is
available
but
free
because
we
couldn’t
store
it
or
in
essence
possess
it.
True
we
had
cassette
decks,
and
we
could
copy
record
open‐air
version
but
usually
the
quality
made
them
worthless.
However
today
with
mp3
quality
available
the
ripped
and
burned
versions
are
as
good
as
the
original.
This
is
a
big
issue
not
just
to
the
RIAA
(Recording
Industry
Association
of
America)
but
also
to
the
mindset
of
the
“ripper.”
If
taking
other
people’s
property
is
acceptable
at
a
young
age
how
can
that
ever
change
with
respect
to
stealing
ideas
and
intellectual
property
in
college
and
the
workplace.
If
the
magic
of
talking
to
anyone
anywhere
at
anytime
also
exists
how
and
when
do
individuals
feel
distance?
In
a
recent
survey
of
honors
students
I
asked
them
the
following
questions.
Do
you
think
it
acceptable
to
steal
music?
Over
90%
said
more
than
acceptable,
typically
stating
that
the
music
was
simply
there
for
the
taking
and
why
not?
I
also
asked
how
they
develop
an
original
theme
to
their
work?
This
was
the
more
difficult
answer
to
give.
Many
thought
it
okay
to
depend
heavily
on
packaged
research
by
this
I
mean
research
that
exists
at
a
secondary
source
level.
Is
this
the
exponent
of
invalid
search
methods
or
simply
laziness?
Maybe
they
really
didn’t
know
how
to
research
or
they
just
didn’t
think
it
necessary?
If
we
are
developing
a
society
of
“rippers”
then
what
can
we
expect?
Gen‐i
is
going
to
get
what
they
want
exactly
when
they
want
it.
There
ain’t
no
stopping
them
now!

actually
hated
disco

the
record

no
pun
intended).
The
Digital
Divide
Described
by
Phluid
in
the
article
“The
Digital
Divide

America
“
–
the
term
“Digital
Divide”
was
created
by
Lloyd
Morrisett,
the
former
president
of
the
Markle
Foundation,
an
organization
dedicated
to
promoting
information
technology
for
health
and
public
needs.
Lloyd
Morrisett
coined
the
term
to
differentiate
between
technology
“haves”
and
“have‐nots”
(Hoffman
55)
Today
this
differentiation
has
developed
into
“capable”
and
“incapable”.

about
the
capable…
In
a
recent
honors
conference
given
at
the
C.
W.
Post
campus
of
Long
Island
University
an
impromptu
survey
revealed
that
90%
of
the
students
had
access
to
high‐speed
Web
connections.
This
coupled
with
their
research
habits.
Where
as
the
majority
still
favored
the
traditional
approach
to
primary
source
research
many
stated
that
they
were
tempted
to
use
secondary
sources,
primarily
Web‐based
search
engine
sources.
This
spoke
a
lot
about
the
capability
of
this
generation
and
of
those
“capable”
of
accessing
the
information.
In
his

“Age”
Matthew
Gartland
states
the
following,
“The
techno
youngsters,
however,
have
the
ultimate
edge.
They
were
raised
in
environments
filled
with
new
technologies
and
were
introduced
to
these
concepts
are
far
earlier
ages
than
their
parents.
The
birth
and
accelerated
growth
of
the
Internet
and
high‐speed
broadband
has
fueled
their
interest
and
passion
to
learn
more
and
capitalize
on
the
many
wonderful
and
dynamic
opportunities
that
have
emerged
in
tech
fields
at
home
and
across
the
globe.
To
succeed
in
a
society
where
globalization
is
running
rampant
and
job
outsourcing
is
becoming
more
common,
these
techno
youngsters
have
acquired
the
evolved
understanding
that
knowledge
is
more
powerful

ever

to

appropriating
Internet

is
becoming
the
norm
then

process

researching
changed
for
good?

what
level
can
we
accept
their
work
as
valid

or
in
art
as
original?

generation
that
realizes
knowledge
grows
minute‐by‐minute
and
second
by
second.
Dynamic
content
management
is
quickly
becoming
a
double‐edged
sword.
Here
we
wish
to
update
daily
the
content
of
a
Website
for
educational
purposes
but
at
the
same
time
we
make
it
more
difficult
for
a
teacher
to
find
the
source
of
the
plagiarism.
It
is
like
playing
whack‐a‐mole
with
the
entire
world.
As
soon
as
something
gets
updated
the
teacher
or
validating
individual
has
to
find
the
material
and
hold
it
in
their
own
database.
Not
an
easy
task.
The
question
is
now
how
do
we
hold
back
the
tide
of
new
information?
Products
like
Turnitin.com
are
trying
to
combat
these
issues
but
not
every
school
or
university
can
afford
the
license
fee.
However
companies
like
Blackboard
are
integrating
“Turnitin”
into
their
learning
management
solution
structures.
Recently
I
conducted
another
survey
of
both
honors
and
non‐honors
students.
The
purpose
of
the
survey
was
to
determine
both
Internet
usage
and
research
habits.
Some
of
the
questions
asked
were
as
follows.
Do
you
have
cable
modems?
Only
80%
said
they
had
cable
modems
while
10%
said
they
had
dial
up
and
the
other
10%
said
they
had
something
like
a
Digital
Subscriber
Line.
Almost
all
had
a
CD
burner
and
50%
had
a
DVD
burner.
Now
with
the
technology
in
place
the
other
questions
were
more
so
geared
towards
their
use
of
such
technology.

for

How
heavily
do
you
rely
on
the
Internet
for
your
primary
source?
Do
you
use
it
for
secondary
sources?
In
these
cases
almost
all
of
the
non‐honors
students
stated
yes
to
these
questions
while
the
honors
students
stated
that
they
still
use
the
library
and
librarians
for
their
research
needs.
When
the
group
was
asked
do
you
use
the
Internet
to
steal
music
and
or
images?
Almost
all
said
yes.
Do
you
use
the
Internet
to
steal
research
papers?
Almost
all
said
no.
They
stated
that
stealing
research
papers
was
reaching
a
bit
too
far
and
not
worth
the
risk.
However
when
asked
do
you
think
it
right
to
take
information
or
intellectual
property
from
the
Internet
the
group
still
seemed
confused
by
the
question.
For
if
it
is
okay
to
steal
music
and
images
what
was
actually
considered
intellectual
property
seemed
to
be
still
up
in
the
air.
However
the
only
concern
seemed
to
be
getting
in
trouble
for
stealing
research
papers
only
because
of
the
possible
punishment.
What
was
most
disconcerting
of
this
survey
was
how
they
drew
their
own
lines
in
the
dirt.
Stealing
forms
of
art
was
okay
but
stealing
written
papers
was
not
acceptable.
But
again
it
seemed
to
be
based
on
the
act
of
punishment
and
not
moral
reasoning.
This
is
where
the
problem
lies.
For
how
long
until
that
line
fades
away?
How
long
until
the
need
for
citation
and
reference
becomes
fogged
to
the
point
of
non‐
distinction?
Onward….
If
this
new
Gen‐i
has
a
right
to
their
path
of
knowledge
how
will
we
as
educators
facilitate
that
path?
How
will
we
pave
this
path
towards
valid
content?
Will
we
be
able
to
handle
the
ten
billion
web
pages
available?
How
will
we
manage
the
truth
that
is
truly
out
there?
It
increasingly
looks
like
the
student
may
truly
become
the
teacher
of
the
new
“generation
interactive.”
How
are
they
wired?
Are
the
users
of
this
new
technology
wired
differently
then
their
predecessors?
Are
they
more
prone
to
multitasking
and
receiving
information
at
a
greater
pace?
Do
they
actually
use
this
new
knowledge
or
is
it
just
stored
like
random
trivia?
To
answer
these
questions
you
need
to
sit
and
talk
with
these
new
users.
You
need
to
find
out
what
they
are
expecting
from
an
experience.
What
do
they
want
to
walk
away
with
that
is
different
from
the
older
generation
and
how
will
we
position
ourselves
to
adapt
to
their
needs
and
desires?
What
changes
will
have
to
be
made
when
you
will
be
able
to
download
a
movie
set
or
DVD
box
set
in
three
to
five
seconds?
What
will
happen
to
the
mindset
of
these
users?
With
all
of
these
choices
will
their
attention
span
deteriorate
or
expand?
Will
they
kind
of
mutate
to
a
different
mindset?
This
has
happened
in
the
past.
The
individuals
of
the
past
have
adapted
and
changed
the
way
they
decipher
information.
They
adapt
and
absorb
differently.
They
weigh
choices
on
further
information
not
just
what
is
in
front
of
them.
This
is
a
form
of
multi‐tasking.
In

A

was
founded
in
1984
by
a
group
of
computer
scientists
at
Stanford.
The
company
went
public
in
1990,
and
reported
$34.9
billion
for
fiscal
year
2007.
As
Baby
Boomers
scramble
to
keep
up,
the
youngest
segment
of
the
work
force
‐‐
often
referred
to
as
Millennials
‐‐
are
taking
the
lead
when
it
comes
to
certain
styles
of
work,
such
as
the
creative
tag‐teaming
favored
at
Cisco.
Natural‐born
surfers
They
also
are
key
to
Cisco’s
goal
of
finding
better
ways
to
aggregate
and
distill
data
flooding
in
from
the
Internet.
The
average
knowledge
worker
is
flooded
with
data
every
day,
swamped
by
information
both
relevant
and
irrelevant
to

messaging,

mail,

forums,
RSS
feeds
‐‐
it’s
overwhelming.

solution:

designed

tie
into

using

to
enter
information

More

the

Collaborating
on
new
technologies
pays
off
in
several
ways;
Kang
noted,
including
employee
productivity,

innovation,
recruitment
and
retention

evidence

is
hard
to
dispute
that
there

new
mindset
evolving.

As we enter the next era of eBook readers with the KindleDX the beginning of the end is at hand. Textbook publishers are going to have to drastically rethink their business model. Bezos got it right although he is not thinking ahead enough. He’s holding on too tight to the technology and not letting the content lead the way. VHS v. Betamax – Mac v. Windows – Xerox v. Innovation. Many companies have made the same mistake. Bezos needs to realize Esther Dyson hit it right on the head in 1995 when she said,”content is king”. That was 14 years ago and it is still true. Bezos has made the right connections but lower the cost of the device. Make up for the R&D some other way. Make the books very cheap sell hundreds of them, do a serial thing where you need to download everyday. Get some color on that screen and syndicate comics, start an AmazonTV Channel when IPTV hits. Start commissioning shows and become a network.
Content will always be king – Esther had it right and still does. Use the new breadth of this medium to bring out the artists and the storytellers and the thinkers and the politicos. Break it wide open before the ISPs try to control it. Get the masses involved afterall we paid for it to get started now the ISPs want their piece. Not fair. You don’t sweep in like some interloper once the grunt work has been done. We built the Web through our taxes and our use. We the people made it what it is today. Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Jim Clark, Ted Nelson, Douglas Englehardt, etc ,etc.
We need to keep it as free as possible and as open as possible. If we let the ISPs take over who can say what at what bandwidth we all lose. We need Net Neutrality and we need it to stay for good. My student did a great paper on it. Check my list of blogs and see it. I won’t give her name out now. But a great thinker and a great writer.
If we don’t stand up for Net Neutrality now we will lose it. Now is the time, the line is being drawn quietly. They are circling the camp and getting ready for sunrise as we sit and watch Prairie Dogs on YouTube. Get involved, write your congressman or any politician and tell them to keep the Net free as possible. If not this is the beginning of the end.

There is a change coming in the world of academic structure. With the current article in U.S. News and World Report (http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/k-12/2009/08/25/a-kindle-for-every-student.html) the world of textbook publishing and its usage in the classroom is going to change for good. The report goes on to say that the experience of learning will also be different and it should be because the user base (student) has changed. Now students of this new Generation-i are looking for a greater experience. A recent 93-page report on online education, conducted by SRI International for the Department of Education, has a starchy academic title, but a most intriguing conclusion: “On average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction.”

Online Learning Changing the Face of American Education
Internet-based courses opening doors to knowledge and training for millions

Washington — In California, a middle school student recovering from a long-term illness checks a class Web site for homework assignments. In Illinois, a busy professional collaborates on a project with colleagues scattered throughout the country, earning credits for a master’s degree in business administration.
Individually, neither of these innovations in education is revolutionary or even new; the Internet, after all, is more than 10 years old. Collectively, however, online instruction is rapidly achieving a critical mass that is transforming education in the United States from the elementary grades to the university level.
ONLINE GROWTH
Almost 3.5 million, or 20 percent, of all college students took one or more online courses during the 2006-2007 academic year — an increase of almost 10 percent over the previous year, according to Sloan Consortium, a foundation-supported organization working to improve online education.

If it is necessary today to create from your own art then why was it okay for artists like Rauschenberg, Heartfeld, and Schwitters to take art from their current technology sources and rework them through their own technological means to create new work? Didn’t they just simply use the tools of their time to collect this “found” art (that was copyrighted) by someone else and rework the imagery into a new piece of work? Was it because corporations owned the imagery? Well aren’t Corbis, iStockPhoto and other sources corporations?
Didn’t the New York Times own many of Rauschenberg’s images?

Didn’t the Nazi propaganda machine own Heartfield’s?

Weren’t Schwitters taken from popular culture magazines and newspapers?

That was the technology of the day and these artists used it to create new work. They then sold the work. Today we purchase the imagery from these stock sources rework it through our technological means and yet somehow it is seen as not ours? Why? Didn’t we gather skill sets to create this new work?

Once movable type took hold the world changed. Information could now be spread cheaper and easier than ever before. In my opinion we are entering that phase again 550 years later. A half a millennium is all it took? We now are entering a digital revolution of sorts. For years we could see it coming now it is finally here. The real question is are we ready to take advantage of it? there is a lot to discuss and I would welcome your opinion.

New Xbox 360 coming fall 2010?
(Credit: Engadget)Take this one with a grain of salt, but gaming site 1UP is reporting that it’s hearing a new Xbox 360 is in the works and is set to be released next fall in conjunction with the release of Project Natal. That in itself isn’t all that newsworthy since it seems pretty logical that Microsoft would put out a new console with the release of its fancy new, you-are-the-controller technology that was demonstrated at E3 this month. However, 1UP is saying that while the new Xbox 360 will carry a new name and be a “new platform,” it won’t necessarily be much of an upgrade over the existing 360.
Here’s the full quote:
“It’s not clear what sort of upgrades we might see, but some have suggested it will be a slight upgrade of the current Xbox 360 technology. Current Xbox 360 games would be playable on it, but future games would be able to take advantage of the added muscle.”
The article also adds that, “Games played on the more advanced Xbox would look or perform better, but publishers will still be able to support owners of both systems.”
Again, this all makes sense, and you’d expect Microsoft (and possibly Sony) to have some new hardware a year from now. But it will interesting to see how Microsoft manages gamers’ expectations and the sales of its consoles as it gets closer to releasing Project Natal. It’s also important to note that Microsoft has said the new technology will work with existing Xbox 360s so long as you add the new video camera accessory.
How much credence do you think this rumor has? And if Microsoft is indeed going to release a whole new Xbox 360, what do you think it should be called? Xbox 360 Natal doesn’t have the greatest ring to it.

This class utilizes Macintosh Computers, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and QuarkXPress. Using these design programs students develop a body of images directed towards graphic design both print and new media. This class is focused on an introduction to advertising with a constant relation to the Elements and Principles of Design. The emphasis is on creativity, exploration and the development of a working knowledge of advertising design and how it is integrated into all forms of print and new media.

Class Objectives
The objectives of this course are:
1. To learn the purpose, theories and practices of contemporary advertising.
2. To enhance the student’s visual, written and oral communication skills.
2. To participate in discussion, collaboration and critical dialogue.
3. To develop an enriched understanding of image use and possibilities.
4. To explore the aesthetics, uses and the ethical and legal ramifications of advertising.
Class Requirements
1. Mandatory attendance (Maximum of 2 absences with a doctor’s note) More than two absences or habitual lateness will result in a lowered grade.
2. Homework and tutorials on time and as assigned.
3. A passing grade on the Theoretical Exam.
4. Final portfolio of all assignments in print out and pdf format.
5. All assignments must be designed in pencil first. All designs will be submitted for approval before any work is started. Each project will be finalized in a computer-based layout unless otherwise specified. (Special instructions will be given before each project) Typography will be stressed as well as design of the entire page. Final render will be in color and will be accompanied by all layout and design sketches.
Class Materials
1. Notebook and Sketchbook specifically for this class.
2. Images (Photographs and collage material for scanning), as required.
3. A good ruler, preferably showing “inches”, “Picas and Points”
4. At least 1 Zip Disk, formatted for the Macintosh computer*, (more as needed).
All to be present at every class.
* For those students who own an IBM compatible PC it is required that you purchase Mac formatted Zip disks (corrupt files have been common on Windows formatted disks) and that you could purchase “Mac Opener” or similar software for your PC in order for you to be able to work on class project files at home.
Grading
Final grade will be based on class participation, critiques and student progress, evaluation of MidTerm and Final exam, and 5 projects (emphasis on the final project) and evaluation of student’s notebook. More than three absences will result in a lower grade.

ASSIGNMENTS
1. Soft Goods Product – Create an advertisement (9” x 12” full bleed) using a soft goods product.
Example of soft goods (items that are consumable); food, cosmetics, office supplies, etc.
2. Hard Goods Product – Create an advertisement (9” x 12” full bleed) using a hard goods product.
Example of hard goods (items that are not consumable); cars, sneakers, appliances, etc.
3. PSA – Public Service Advertisement – Create an advertisement (9” x 12” full bleed) for a non-profit organization.
Example of Non Profit Organizations; MADD, ACLU, VFW, etc.
4. New Product Launch campaign – Group Project (No less than 2 people)
Research a new product from any category – hard goods, soft goods or non-profit, etc.
Create a four to five piece advertising campaign to be accompanied by a marketing research report.

Create a marketing research report for product.
Product Benefits, Client Profile, Marketplace Demographic, Market Analysis Media and Creative Budget.
Criteria for All Projects
All work must have design approvals before completion.
Always create an original design and sketch your layouts on paper. 3 pencil sketches of all layouts. Finished piece to be created in Photoshop, Illustrator and QuarkXPress.
All source materials photograph, illustrative or real objects should be created by you via digital camera, scanner or illustrated. Any stock photography must be captioned in the advertisement.
All copywriting must be your own. Logo design can be from existing materials.
All Finals must be printed in full color
Detailed instructions will be given before each assignment.
Grading will be based on originality of concept as well as execution of the work.

Course Description
IMA 505 Multimedia History, Theory and Criticism
This class will present a historical and critical context within which the field of multimedia and interactivity can be studied. It will develop ways of analyzing the relationship of new interactive work to the rich history of multimedia art forms. Subjects to be introduced will include photography, cinema, radio, television, computers and the Internet, as well as study of the impact of new technologies on the field of cultural studies.

Assignments
A minimum of three papers (one being an extensive final paper) will be assigned. Two papers will be done individually and consist of a major event that has reformed or reshaped the world of interactive media. One final paper can be a group assignment. Group should not be any larger than three people. Each paper will start with a written outline inclusive of objectives and will address specific criteria and contain factual documented information properly annotated.
Example: If an educational or technological development is selected students will be asked to analyze the effect this development had on the world, marketplace and subsequent watershed effects of this development. Paper must contain footnotes and bibliography (style to be discussed).
All assignments must also start with outlines and adequate flowcharting. Subsequent stages of writing and development must be signed off on by instructor.
Evaluation
